8th Grade Chorus Students,
Most of you have been in your school's chorus for many years. You have learned and practiced skills that are valuable in making wonderful music performances and you have the experience that we need in the Somerville High School Chorus.
By now, you have been approached to make decisions on the courses you will be taking at Somerville High School. You may have been told many things about what classes you should and should not take your freshman year. I am writing you to encourage you to continue your singing by taking a chorus class.
It is not true that you cannot take chorus and be a part of sports activities. In fact, there are many chorus students that have also been members of the football, basketball, baseball, hockey and soccer teams. Many chorus members run track, are cheerleaders or play golf. Chorus is scheduled as a class period during the school day and athletic events are after school. Athletic coaches are made aware of music performances far in advance and are amiable to the few (2 to 3 times a school year) required performances that are in the evenings.
It is not true that if you enroll into the CTE Program, that you cannot take Chorus. In fact there is a class in the Somerville High School Program of Studies specifically for CTE students, called CTE Chorus (862S). This single semester class allows you to participate in chorus for half of the school year.
It is not true that colleges and universities are only interested in your GPA (Grade Point Average). They are most interested in the diversity of your educational experience, and highly value a student who shows dedication to an art form in addition to academic prowess.
It was Plato who said, " I would teach children music, physics and philosophy; but most importantly music, for the patterns in music and all the arts are the keys to learning."
Please talk with your parents and your school music teacher about taking chorus as a freshman at Somerville High School.
I look forward to seeing you as a high school student in September.
Sincerely,
Beverly J. Mosby
Choral Director, Somerville High School
